Kourtaliotiko Gorge

A dramatic canyon cutting through limestone
cliffs—offering refreshing waterfalls, verdant pools,
and invigorating hiking routes for nature enthusiasts.

About

Kourtaliotiko Gorge lies on the southern coast of Crete, about 14 km west of Plakias and 40 km southwest of Rethymno. Carved by the Kourtaliotis River, its steep walls rise up to 300 m and shelter a lush microclimate where water cascades into deep pools. The Gorge takes its name from the resonant “kourtala” echo produced when the wind whistles through its rocky passages. Well-marked trails lead from the hilltop village of Kourtaliotiko down into the canyon, passing Byzantine chapels, a series of waterfalls, and natural swimming holes perfect for cooling off.
